• Welcome to Schumacher North, a regional forum devoted to exploring and promoting the ideas of deep ecology, sustainable development and social transformation pioneered by E.F. Schumacher, author of ‘Small Is Beautiful’.

Schumacher North offers a varied programme of talks, courses, conferences, and practical initiatives, aimed at bringing about the sane, sustainable and compassionate world that Fritz Schumacher and his successors have envisioned.

Zero Carbon Yorkshire

Let’s make Yorkshire the first Zero Carbon region in the UK!

Zero Carbon Yorkshire is an initiative of Schumacher North and its partners, in particular Friends of the Earth and Oasis School of Human Relations.  After the successful climate festival, ‘For the Love of Yorkshire’, which ran from 10 November to 13 December 2015 across five Yorkshire cities, we plan to continue the county-wide conversation about climate change and how we can drive solutions here at home, as well as internationally.  We are extremely grateful to the University of Leeds for financial support, and for the tireless work of the lead organiser, Kate Lock, for making the festival such a success.

Join us for the launch of Zero Carbon Yorkshire in Leeds on 27 February 2016 (Note Revised Date!)

We are staging a full day Open Space event at Leeds Civic Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., aiming to hear from as many people as possible from all sectors and locations across the Yorkshire region – join us and help to co-create a vision and roadmap for transforming our regional economy into one that cares for both people and planet, and show the world how to create a zero-carbon economy!
