Equality in the work place

Equality in the work place is one of the most important factors in ensuring that employees feel comfortable and positive at work. Equality means that there is fair treatment of all employees regardless of their, gender, religious beliefs, race, age, sexual preference, nationality and disability. Employers must make sure everyone that works for the company is given equal opportunities, pay and are not treated any differently by anyone in the company because of their differences.

Discrimination in the workplace?

Discrimination in the workplace is an unfortunately common occurrence. Discrimination is classed as the unfair treatment of someone because of their age, race, religion, disability or sexual orientation. It is illegal to discriminate against someone in a workplace and many have taken their former employers to court and won due to discrimination.

What to do if you are being discriminated against.

If you are being discriminated against at work the first thing you need to do is keep a diary, make sure to write down what is happening and by whom and also when it is occurring. You should then talk about this with your employer. Your employer or HR manager will be able to help you with the situation and also will have to inform you of your rights and what you are able to do about it.

If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your line manager about it then it is best to talk to the human resources department or the HR person within the company. It is their job to deal with situations like this and there will be procedures in place to resolve issues.

If you are part of a trade union it can also be a good idea to talk to the trade union representative. If the problem is serious and you cannot talk to your employer about it you may also look to go to the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Making Sure Your Work Place is Equal

While it usually isn’t an employees job to ensure the workplace is a fun and fair environment for everyone if you notice something going on that shouldn’t be then you can help to support the member of the team that is being discriminated against.

If you see someone that is being treated unfairly they could likely due with your support. Don’t be afraid to stand up for what is right as this is the only way all workplaces will change.

Make sure that you stand by equality in the workplace by ensuring that you treat all fellow employees fairly and with respect regardless of their age, race, gender, sexual preference.

Treat other as you would like to be treated. If we all do this we will rid the workplace of discrimination.
